WebSimmer the hulls in the water for a couple of hours. Black walnut dye does not need a mordant because of the high level of tannins in the hulls. The tannins will act as a mordant, making the color stick to the cloth or yarn. After the dye has simmered, strain out the hulls. If you're trying to get jet black then Renno's might not do that but that's not why I use trap dye. The purpose is to stop the rust process by letting tannic acid react with the rust the trap. It just happens to turn it black or at least dark brown in the process so we all call it "trap dye".
