Phononic subsurface
WebJul 7, 2024 · Phononics is an emerging field that seeks to elucidate the nature of intrinsic mechanical motion in both conventional and artificially structured materials, and use this knowledge to extend the boundaries of physical response at either the material or structural/device level or both. WebA phononic material for interacting with a fluid or solid flow and methods of using the phononic material are provided. The phononic material includes an interface surface and a subsurface feature. The interface surface is adapted to move in response to a pressure associated with at least one wave in a flow exerted on the interface surface.

This comprises locally attaching a finite phononic structure perpendicular to an elastic surface exposed to the flowing fluid. This structure experiences ongoing excitation by an unstable flow mode traveling in conjunction with the mean flow.
